A
bout the Kea:
The pen is named after Mauna Kea, one of the Hawaiian mountain peaks. While Everest is officially the highest mountain in the world, Mauna Kea located on the island of Hawaii is actually the tallest. It's listed as the third tallest, only because most of it is under water, and thus not counted in its total height. This pen is so named because of the tall tapered finial.

Kea Dimensions:
The Kea has an average (capped) length of about 6". It can be ordered in any of the materials shown or you can select something different to make the pen your own. The clip is now available in nickel or 24k gold finishes. The pen uses a Cartridge/Converter inking system, but could be ordered with a special rubber o-ring that would seal the section to the barrel so it can be used as an eyedropper. It can be ordered with either a #5 or #6 nib. Nib finishes are 2-tone, polished steel, Black Oxide (#6 only), or Ruthenium (#5 only). Current tip sizes are fine, medium, broad, and italic and 1.1 and 1.4 (#5 only) or 1.5 (#6 only).

Kea Options and Upgrades:
The Kea is much like the Nazca in that you have quite a few upgrade options. You can add metal accent bands at various location on the pen, such as the section or finial for just a little touch of flash. Or you can add one or several to the base of the cap. I now have 24k gold bands in a variety of diameters and widths of 1, 2, 3, and 4mm. Inking systems currently available are cartridge/converter (C/C) and button-filler. Nib sizes are #5 or #6 (#6 standard), and finishes available are: polished steel, 2-tone, Ruthenium (#5 only) or Black Oxide (#6 only). Current tip sizes available are x-fine, fine, medium, broad, or two sizes of italic.

I also offer a variety of hand-made Pen Props and Pen Buttons. You can order a Pen Prop in a material to match your pen, or any one of the wooden styles made in a variety of stained and dyed colors. The Pen Buttons are available for any of the clipless pens.

Special Pen Features:
On this pen the client wanted a shorter barrel than what I usually like to use on my pens. She wanted it a little more compact so it was easier to carry it in a purse. So this barrel (less the threads) is only 3" long (instead of the usual 3 1/4" long barrel). I think the slightly longer barrel balances the pen much nicer. I think if the barrel length is too close to the cap length, it makes the pen look squatty. But in this case, it fit the clients need. The pen also has the coarser single-start threads.

About the Material:
This material is a type of acrylic called Acrylic Acetate. It's a harder type of acrylic that can be brittle. But this material had the right balance of hardness for durability, and softness for ease of turning than other Acrylic Acetate's can be. The color name comes from the combination of pink & green chips that would remind you of watermelon.
