A
bout the Loa:
The Loa is named after MOUNT LOA, one of the many mountains on the island of Hawaii. Mauna Loa is also a volcano, and is said to be the largest mountain on Earth in terms of volume. Since this round-top pen probably has the largest diameter cap of all my styles, and a nice wide rounded finial, I though the name appropriate.

Loa Dimensions:
The Loa is like the KEA on steroids. It has a length of about 6", but has a much larger diameter. The finial and barrel end have a nice rounded shape. It has stepped threads, and a pinched style section. The Loa can be ordered in any of the materials shown or you can select something different to make the pen your own. The clip is available in a variety of finishes (nickel chrome, 24k gold and Gunmetal) with similar finishes available for the nib. The standard pen uses a Cartridge/Converter inking system, but can be upgraded to a piston or button filler. If you like to use the pen as an eyedropper, you can order it with a special rubber o-ring that seals the section to the barrel so it can be filled directly with ink. The larger #6 nib is the best size for the Loa, but it could be ordered with a #5 if desired. Nib finishes available for STEEL nibs are: 2-tone, polished steel, Black Oxide (#6 only), or Ruthenium (#5 only). Current tip sizes are x-fine, fine, medium, broad, and two italics (1.1 both; 1.4 for #5 only, and 1.5 for #6 only). 14 & 18K Gold nibs are also available as a special order.

Loa Options and Upgrades:
The Loa is another pen style that allows for a few upgrade options. You can add metal accent bands at various location on the pen such as on the section or cap finial for just a little touch of flash. You can add one or several to the base of the cap, or add a blind-cap and band to the end of the barrel. I have smooth 24k gold bands in a variety of diameters with widths from 1 to 4mm. Inking system upgrades currently available are piston or button-filler. As stated above, you can also upgrade your pen with a 14k or 18k gold nib.

I also offer a variety of hand-made Pen Props and Pen Buttons. You can order a Pen Prop in a material to match your pen, or any one of the wooden styles made in a variety of stained or dyed colors. The Pen Buttons are available for any of the clipless pens.

About this Pen:

The majority of the pens on my website are those special ordered by customers. But once in while I'll post one that I made because I liked the material. Every now and then I'll see some material that catches my eye and have to buy it. Then hope that I'll eventually get a little free time that will allow me to make a pen with it. This pen is one of those, and for now anyway, it's and 'extra'. But it's also for sale if you like it as well (or if the first one sells, another one can be made). In the meantime, I'll enjoy looking at it for a while until someone does purchase it.

About this Material:
Cyclamen is the name of the materials color and is a reference to a dark pink and white flower of the same name. As you can see in the photo's, the material is a mix of pink and white acrylic with veins of gold powder embedded in clear acrylic. Because the material had such a bold pattern, I had a hard time deciding on the right pen style to use that would allow the pattern to be well displayed without the pen style itself trying to compete. Eventually, I chose the Loa. The Loa has a simple understated yet 'beefy' style, so I think it was a great canvas to display the bold pattern of this material. (Note: If you like this pattern, keep your eyes posted as I will be making another pen with some similar Erinoid in a color called 'Blue Smoke'. That pen will be in the same Loa style, but will be 'two-tone' using a solid color pulled out of the pattern for a few accent parts).

Erinoid is the name of the iconic company of Erinoid Limited located in the UK that manufacturers the material. Erinoid Limited was one of the early manufacturers of Casein and Casein products, making a variety of every day use items starting in the early 1900's such as buttons, combs, knitting needles, and of course, fountain pens. These days, many in the UK refer to such acrylics generically as Erinoid, just as we use Kleenex generically for tissues. Erinoid (the company) makes pen blanks in a variety of colors and patterns. And after using many different colors of acrylics over the years, I think the colors of the Erinoid acrylics are the most vibrant.

The nib is a new SMOOTH face style from Jowo. Instead of the traditional 'floral' or scroll design on the surface or face of the nib, this new steel nib has a smooth surface just like the solid gold and rhodium nibs. These new nibs are also available in the polished steel nibs. But currently not all tip sizes are avaiable. So contact me for size availability. I will refer to these new smooth nibs as 'SPS' (Smooth Polish Steel) and 'SAGS' (Smooth All Gold Steel).
