A
bout the Jannu:
The Jannu is named after MOUNT JANNU, the 32nd highest mountain in world. The official name of this peak is Kumbhakarna, and it is located in Nepal India (I didn't think "Kumbhakarna" wouldn't quite fit as a pen name). It's also called "Phoktanglungma" (still too long!), which literally means "Mountain with Shoulders". It is more notable for its climbing challenge as it's one of the hardest peaks to climb. For more information about mount Jannu, visit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jannu

Jannu Style and Dimensions:
The most prominent feature of this pen is the two-tone color design. I thought the name fit because the style because the white finial on the red & white pen reminds me of a snow capped mountain. The Jannu has an oversized cap with a round finial and a tapered edge at the base that tapers down to meet the barrel. It's two-tone style is perfect for using your imagination and creating a pen with a unique color combination or just for adding a little flair to your pen. It's fitted with a #6 nib. Nib finishes available for STEEL nibs are: 2-tone, polished steel, Black Oxide (#6 only), or Ruthenium (#5 only). Current tip sizes are x-fine, fine, medium, broad, and two italics (1.1 both; 1.4 for #5 only, and 1.5 for #6 only).

Jannu Options and Upgrades:
Since the Jannu is fairly plain as far as hardware goes, you could upgrade it with a variety of accent bands at various location. The standard pen is a cartridge/converter (C/C), but could be ordered as an eyedropper, button, or piston filler. 14 & 18K Gold nibs are also available as a special order.

I also offer a variety of hand-made Pen Props and Pen Buttons. You can order a Pen Prop in a material to match your pen, or any one of the wooden styles made in a variety of stained or dyed colors. The Pen Buttons are available for any of the clipless pens.

About this Pen:

The majority of the pens on my website are those special ordered by customers. But once in while I'll post one that I made because I liked the material. Every now and then I'll see some material that catches my eye and have to buy it. Then hope that I'll eventually get a little free time that will allow me to make a pen with it. This pen is one of those, and for now anyway, it's and 'extra'. But it's also for sale if you like it as well (or if the first one sells, another one can be made). In the meantime, I'll enjoy looking at it for a while until someone does purchase it.

About this Material:
This material is and Erinoid* acrylic called Blue Smoke. It's a mix of several colors that blend together to create a bold pattern. Some of the colors are semi-transparent (the navy blue base color and the brown), the others (light blue and black) are opaque. Like the Cyclamen Erinoid Loa I also made, I had a hard time deciding on the right pen style to use that I thought would allow the pattern to be well displayed without the pen style itself trying to compete. With the Cyclamen, I chose the Loa. A Loa probably would have worked for the Blue Smoke too, but I didn't exactly want to make another Loa from a similar material. But like the Cyclamen, I thought the Blue Smoke's pattern would show well in the same large pen style. So I decided to make it in the Jannu. The Jannu is similar to the Loa, but uses a secondary accent color made from a solid color pulled from the pattern.

Before I make the pen, I had a hard time deciding what color to use for the secondary color. I had both the blue and brown in solid acrylic, but I didn't think either looked quite right when the blanks were laid together. In areas where the brown was mixed with navy blue base it looked gray. So I thought gray might work best. So that was my plan. BUT, sometimes a pattern can look very different in the turned piece compared to the square blank, and this turned out to be one those colors. Once I made the barrel and saw all the light blue, I knew I had to change my plan and use the light blue as the accent color. And then once I made the cap and saw the light blue swirl that ran vertically up to the finial, I knew I made the right choice. Then I chose to use the dark hardware in an attempt to blalance out the light blue.

*Erinoid is the name of the iconic company of Erinoid Limited located in the UK that manufacturers the material. Erinoid Limited was one of the early manufacturers of Casein and Casein products, making a variety of every day use items starting in the early 1900's such as buttons, combs, knitting needles, and of course, fountain pens. These days, many in the UK refer to such acrylics generically as Erinoid, just as we use Kleenex generically for tissues. Erinoid (the company) makes pen blanks in a variety of colors and patterns. And after using many different colors of acrylics over the years, I think the colors of the Erinoid acrylics are the most vibrant.
