A
bout the Loa:
The Loa is named after MOUNT LOA, one of the many mountains on the island of Hawaii. Mauna Loa is also a volcano, and is said to be the largest mountain on Earth in terms of volume. Since this round-top pen probably has the largest diameter cap of all my styles, and a nice wide rounded finial, I though the name appropriate.

Loa Dimensions:
The Loa is like the KEA on steroids. It has a length of about 6", but has a much larger diameter. The finial and barrel end have a nice rounded shape. It has stepped threads, and a pinched style section. The Loa can be ordered in any of the materials shown or you can select something different to make the pen your own. The clip is available in a variety of finishes (nickel chrome, 24k gold and Gunmetal) with similar finishes available for the nib. The standard pen uses a Cartridge/Converter inking system, but can be upgraded to a piston or button filler. If you like to use the pen as an eyedropper, you can order it with a special rubber o-ring that seals the section to the barrel so it can be filled directly with ink. The larger #6 nib is the best size for the Loa, but it could be ordered with a #5 if desired. Nib finishes available for STEEL nibs are: 2-tone, polished steel, Black Oxide (#6 only), or Ruthenium (#5 only). Current tip sizes are x-fine, fine, medium, broad, and two italics (1.1 both; 1.4 for #5 only, and 1.5 for #6 only). 14 & 18K Gold nibs are also available as a special order.

Loa Options and Upgrades:
The Loa is another pen style that allows for a few upgrade options. You can add metal accent bands at various location on the pen such as on the section or cap finial for just a little touch of flash. You can add one or several to the base of the cap, or add a blind-cap and band to the end of the barrel. I have smooth 24k gold bands in a variety of diameters with widths from 1 to 4mm. Inking system upgrades currently available are piston or button-filler. As stated above, you can also upgrade your pen with a 14k or 18k gold nib.

I also offer a variety of hand-made Pen Props and Pen Buttons. You can order a Pen Prop in a material to match your pen, or any one of the wooden styles made in a variety of stained or dyed colors. The Pen Buttons are available for any of the clipless pens.

About this Pen and Material:

This pen was a special order, with the customer supplying the material and nib. The primary material is Alumilite, the secondary material is Acrylic Acetate. Unfortunately, as it is with some materials, the camera wasn't very kind to the material and it doesn't show up very well. As the photo's do show, it's a dark color, but had areas where the brighter colors (brown, blue and purple) pop out as the pen is rotated. The color name for the material is actually quite fitting, as it looks just like the photo's you see of a a dark nebula. It's also hard to notice, but there is a secondary color on the Section called Orion Gray. Unfortunately due to the small piece used, it ended up looking mostly black with just two sides where a little of the gray pops out.

About the Section... Although it looks like a regular Section, it is, but it isn't. The customer sent the nib and feed and wanted me to use a jowo housing and then just make the Section. But the back of the nib was a little wider than a jowo, so it woudln't fit into the housing. So I had to come up with an alternative plan. I ended up finding a ready made Section from a kit pen (the kind that are machined inside for a nib and feed). So I used that, but turn the Section down a thin tenon and then glued a piece of the Orion Gray acrylic over it. Then turn it to the desired size shape. It worked perfectly, but was a bit anticlimatic when it turned out that hardly any of the gray color was visible. But sometimes you just never know what a certain material is going to look like until it's turned and polished.
