I’m still experimenting with my laser engraver, trying new ideas one step at a time. This time I tried engraving a large image on a pen cap. My choice for this first canvas was the Nanga Magnum cap with a diameter of about .71″ or 18mm.

I wanted the image to cover most of the cap rather than just a flat image that was only visible in one area, so I searched until I found a suitable image. Eventually I found a dragon that looked like it was flying, so I thought it would work perfectly for this test.

The engraved image looks great! But with just the cap image, the pen looked like it needed something else. So I created a 2″ tall scale pattern and engraved that around the circumference of the barrel. I thought the combination of the two engravings makes the pen look more complete.
