Lhotse Clipless Fountain Pen
About the Lhotse:
The Lhotse’s cigar shape is one of the most iconic and popular fountain pen styles ever made. It has a gradual taper radiating out from the joint, finishing with a nice round-over at each end. The section’s style is what I call pinched, with the smallest diameter in the center. The pinch is just enough for a nice, comfortable grip. The clipless style and fairly short length allow the pen to be easily carried in a pocket, purse, briefcase, or knapsack. The standard length is about 5 1/2″ (140mm), but custom sizes are also available. The Lhotse uses a standard cartridge/converter (C/C) inking system and can be fitted with a #5 or #6 nib. The standard STEEL is available in polished steel (P/S) or all-gold-steel (AGS). Sometimes a dark finish is available, so please inquire if you’re looking for a different finish. 14 & 18K gold nibs are also available as upgrades and are usually available in all-gold or rhodium finishes.
About the Name:
The Lhotse, pronounced “loat (as in goat) say,” is named after Mount Lhotse, the fourth-highest mountain on earth. Mount Lhotse is best known for its proximity to mount Everest and the fact that climbers ascending the “standard route” on that peak spend some time on its northwest face. And in fact, Mount Lhotse has the smallest topographical prominence value of any of the other mountains in it’s group.
Lhotse MAGNUM:
The MAGNUM is a larger version of the Lhotse that is 18% larger. The MAGNUM has a capped length of 6 1/2″ (165 mm) and a diameter of .71″ (18 mm). The threads are also larger than the original to maintain the scale. The only part of the pen that isn’t scaled up is the nib. The MAGNUM come standard with the same #6 steel nib as the original size. But from time to time, #8 steel nibs are available. Please inquire for current availability. If you’re interested in a large nib in gold, PELIKAN offers their M1000, and Bock offers their type 380. Both are available in 18K only.
Lhotse Options and Upgrades:
This is another pen style that allows only a few upgrades and/or options. Although the standard section style is pinched, you could select one of the other styles to make your pen unique. You could add a metal accent band to the base of the cap or add a hidden ring clip (see the Tortoise Shell Nanga). The accent bands are available in several finishes (24k gold, nickel, or rhodium) and come in a variety of diameters with widths from 1 to 4mm (n 1mm increments). As stated above, you can also upgrade your pen with a 14k or 18k gold nib.
Inking system upgrades… The Lhotse could be fitted with a number of inking systems: eyedroppers, buttons, levers, and even bulb fillers. It would also be a good candidate for the Vacumatic system.
Miscellaneous items:
I also offer a variety of hand-made pen-related items. Pen Props, pen cap Buttons, Pen and Ink Trays, Cufflinks, and Button Covers. Use a Pen Props to display a pen or temporarily raise the nib.
