Cufflinks and Button Covers

I always thought of Cufflinks and Button Covers as jewelry to compliment a suit and tie, allowing a person to display a little of their personality. And although not actually a pen-related item, they can compliment a pen too! So some time ago, I added them as made-to-order items. You can order them separately or along with your pen.

Their are several styles and finishes of cufflinks available. They come in two backing styles: pad and cups. As their names imply, the pad uses a flat backing support that the material is secured onto. Most pads are about 10 mm in diameter.

The cup style is like a shallow, flat-bottom bowl. And while the pad on the pad style only act as a backing, the cup is visible and the material seats in the cup. So you’ll see the edges of the cup and only the face of the material.

Cups are available in various sizes. Since most pen blanks are limited to 3/4″ or less in size, the cups I use most often are 16 mm in diameter. However, I do have some larger 20-mm-diameter round cups and 19-mm-diameter square cups. These larger cups are silver-plated. The 19 mm cups are hinged on the back, allowing them to be stored flat.

The button covers have hinges. Pop open the back, slide over a button, then snap closed. They have a flat surface for adding the feature material. I think they look best with the feature material diameter a little smaller than the cover. This way, it creates a frame around the material.

Cufflinks: Cufflinks are available in several finishes: bright gold, bright silver, antique brass, and gunmetal.

Button Covers: Button covers are only available in bright gold and nickel finishes.

You can also e-mail if you would like to get an update on the current list of sizes and finishes I have on hand.

You can apply just about any material to cufflinks and button covers. Acrylic, wood, or mixed material. If you’re ordering them with a pen, you may want them to match the pen. But that’s not necessary. If you order them along with a pen, I’ll use the leftover material, so they’re guaranteed to match. I’ve also shown a few other examples of ways you can customize your cufflinks.

Material patterns: The best materials to use are those with either a solid color or that the colors or pattern is small enough to fit within the diameter of the applied disc. So acrylics with large patterns usually won’t work. I’ve found that materials with crushed patterns and patterns with contrasting colors show up best, as well as any solid color. It’s also best if the colors and/or patterns are opaque.

Transparent material: The discs made out of the feature material are only about about 3/16″ thick. So if the material has too much transparency, the metal backing and glue may show through.

I stock quite a bit of material. So if you would like to get an update on the materials I have on hand, send me an email.

Ordering is simple! Send me an email with the style and finish of the cufflinks or button covers you wish to order, along with information on the material you would like used. If you’re not sure of the material you want, I can supply a list of materials I have on hand or links to my supplier’s websites so you can look through what is available. Please note that if I have to special order something, the cost will be higher than if I can use material I already have on hand. If you’d like to have cufflinks to match a current pen that you have, it will depend on whether that same material is available.

The samples shown below are just some of the styles I have available. If you have a certain style of size in mind and don’t see it, let me know and I’ll see if I can get it. You can also contact me for a current update on all styles currently available. If you’d like a larger diameter than those shown, I may be able to order them. Sizes available range from as small as 9 mm (pads) up to 25 mm (cups). Some cufflinks shown may be available for immediate purchase or can be duplicated. Please e-mail me to inquire about my availability.

If you have any questions about ordering, please send me an e-mail.
