Ants Theme Pen

Although I assign names to my pens for saving the files, I don’t usually give them official ‘titles’ in the way that a painter would give his or her painting a title. But I did with this pen. I titled it “The Ants go marching”. Why? Because I just thought it was just so obvious!
Project Idea…
The idea for this pen was to see how small of an image I could engrave and have it still hold the detail. The individual ants in the pattern are ~1/4″ or 6mm long (including the extended legs), and the details is still pretty clear. I made the pattern so the ants are marching in a single line, but wrapping around the pen like a barber pole effect from bottom to top.
Creating the pattern…
To get the continuous marching effect with the engraving, I had to create the pattern FLAT with multiple rows of ants at about a 45 degree angles (picture rows of slanted lines spaced out inside a rectangle). Then once the pattern is engraved around the parts, it creates the continous line effect.
About the pen style…
The pen style is a Nazca Mini clipless, with a length of about 5 1/2″ long, and a maximum diameter of .52″ (on the cap). The inking system is C/C with a #6 nib (shown with a medium tip steel nib with black PVD finish.
Finial image…
One last little detail I added was an image of the ant on top of the cap. Engraving these small diameter parts isn’t hard to do, as long as you can get the part centered exactly to match the location of the laser beam. It took some testing to figure how to be able to repeat the process, But once I worked it out, it made it pretty simple to repeat the process for future projects.
