Cherry Calculator Desk Pen

This Desk Pen Set uses solid cherry wood for the base and pen. The base was made by book-matching a single narrow board. Book matching is when you join boards in the center so that the sides are mirror images. On the base the book-matching allows the lighter sapwood to frame the calculator.
The base is 3/8″ thick with a single horizontal bar at the front that raises the base to the angle for viewing the calculator screen. I sanded the face then eased the edges. Afterwards I gave it several coats of a wipe-on polyurethane to protect the wood and enhance the contrasting light and dark wood-grains.
The calculator sits in a 3/16″ recess turned into the base on the lathe. The pen holder is 24k gold to match the pen finish.
The slimline ballpoint pen was made with a single long strip of cherry. The long strip allows the woodgrain to match along the full length of the pen. After turning to shape, the wooden pen parts were finished with a coat of heat-set HUT Crystal Coat for long lasting protection.
Pen note: because of the pen holder style, this style desk set can only be ordered with the ball-point shown. If you prefer a fountain pen, I’ll use a standard swivel and funnel.
