About the material:
This pen was made from a type of acrylic called inlace acrylester (or IA). IA is soft acrylic similar to Alumilite. In order to get a piece large enough for the base, I had to special order a large ‘slab’. And since the acrylic was going to be mixed just for this order, I ask the supplier if he could custom blend the color. They have a similar color but it has more of the gold in it. So I ask him to hold back on the gold so it was more subtle. I thought it was perfect.
Solid black parts. Although I had enough material for all the parts, I decided to make the parts that had threads with a different (harder) acrylic. So instead I used solid black acrylic acetate (AA). The AA is a harder acrylic so the threads will be stronger.
Cutting out the base:
The base and pen parts were cut from a single large piece of acrylic (referred to as a slab). I cut the base to a 3″ x 5″ overall size on the table saw. Once the sides were squared up, I added the ogee profile on the router table.
About the finish:
After the shaping was completed, the base was hand sanded up to 600 grit sandpaper. 120 to 320 standard paper, then 400 and 600 grit wet/dry paper. Then hand sanded up to 12,000 grit with Micro Mesh cloth.
The final step was polishing. First I used a product called One Step plastic polish. Next I use 3M Perfect-It polishing compound (#36060) to bring the acrylic to a glass smooth surface. Finally I polish with Hut Ultra Gloss plastic polish.
