This Pen & Pencil Desk Set was made from solid Mahogany with a hand-rub natural finish.
Most items you’ll find made with mahogany, or with a ‘mahogany finish’ will have a very dark nondescript look. That’s because the wood used (whether it’s mahogany or a substitute) had been layered with several coats of dyes and stains to create a look that is created naturally over time.
While that type of finish gives immediate satisfaction, it actually covers the natural beauty of the mahogany that will now never be seen. And some mahogany isn’t that dark.
This mahogany is lighter with a transparent hand-polished finish that brings out the natural beauty of the wood. The clear lets the beautiful straight grain show and allow the wood to develop that rich dark finish on it’s own over time.
About the pen and pencil:
The pen and pencil are the same size. This allows their orientation in the funnels to be adjusted left or right for the users preference. The bands were handmade from solid brass. The solid brass bands add weight to the pens. Smaller diameter bands (from the pen kits) are also available.

About the funnels:
The styling I used for the funnel is based on Parker desk pens from the late 60’s. I always like the style and the long open area at the top makes it easy to insert a pen.
I shape the opening at the top by hand. First I turn the overall (round) shape on the lathe. Afterwards I mount the funnel in a small jig that has a cutout of the slot shape. Then I pare away the excess wood by hand with a chisel.
