Making the parts:
First the base:
I didn’t have a sample base. All I had to go by for making the base was several photo’s. I didn’t have dimensions but one of the photo’s showed the pen with the base. So I used that photo along with the customer’s pen to approximate the base size.
The base was cut and formed from a larger block of solid black Inlace Acrylester acrylic. But before I cut the acrylic, I made a wooden sample. Whenever I make something new, I like to mockup a sample first. And with a piece with compound angles like this one required both figuring out the degree of the angles and how to cut them.
I went through several samples until I hit on the right combination of angles and the cutting sequence. And as I cut the acrylic, I would cut another wooden sample first just in case I adjusted one of the settings incorrectly. All that was left was to take a deep breath and start cutting. Fortunately it went off without any problems. I included a photo showing the angles in one of the front corners before I began to sand and polish. The combination of the black material and the reflection the shape may be a little hard to see in some of the photo’s.
Next came the funnels:
While the base was made inlace acrylester (IA) acrylic, the funnels were made with acrylic acetate (AA). I use the IA for the base because I have a supplier that will custom pour the slabs for me with that material. I use the AA for the funnels because I can use standard pen blanks. The two materials are the same shade of black so there’s no chance of them not matching.
The funnels were drilled for the vintage Pelikan fountain desk pen shown in the images.
