JEBs Kula Midi Fountain Pen
About the Kula:
The Kula midi fountain pen has several subtle features that blend together to create a nice little compact pen. The section has a straight style with a very slight taper front to back. But the most prominent feature of the Kula that you won’t notice until you uncap it is the location of the capping threads. The thread design is like that found on the Nanga, which is what I call forward-mounted threads. Although these threads are slightly different. The Kula uses single-start threads with a coarse profile. As a result, although the threads are very short, it still takes one full turn to install the cap.
Another subtle feature of the Kula is the slightly recessed #6 nib. While most of the midi pens use the smaller #5 nib, the Kula uses the larger #6. And then, to help hide the larger size, the nib is recessed about 1/4″ into the section.
About the Name:
This pen got it’s name from Kula Kangri mountain. The mountain is claimed by many authorities to be the highest mountain in Bhutan*, but this is disputed by others, who claim that Kula Kangri is wholly in Tibet. The first ascent was by a combined Japanese and Chinese team in 1986. The mountain occupies two ranges, the Himalaya and the Bhutan Himalaya. *Bhutan (officially named the Kingdom of Bhutan) is a landlocked country in South Asia. Located in the Eastern Himalayas.
Kula dimensions:
The pen has an average length of only 5 1/4″. The cap diameter is just under 9/16″, and the barrel is 1/2″ behind the section.
Options and upgrades:
Clip style: As you can see from the photo’s, the Kula was made with different clip styles. The standard clip is the long teardrop shown on the black pen in the main image. The other clip was customer-supplied, so it is not available.
Nib: As stated above, the Kula is fitted with a larger #6 steel nib but could be ordered with a smaller (non-recessed) #5 nib. The nib finish depends on the size. So inquire for availability.
Inking system: The inking system available is C/C (cartridge/converter) only.
