About the Rimo:

I had several goals in mind for this pocket pen. First, I wanted it to come standard with the larger #6 nib. Second, I wanted the pen long enough that it could be used without posting the cap. And third, I wanted it to have a smoother, more streamlined look. Like the mass-produced pens that don’t have threads.

This pen is named after the Rimo Muztagh mountain range; it is one of the most remote subranges of the Karakoram range in northwestern India (it is also claimed by Pakistan). The range has several summits under the same name, and the area was little-known and almost entirely unvisited until the late twentieth century, with none of the summits ever being successfully ascended. The first visits to the area were made in 1914 and 1929, respectively. The first climbing attempt (to the Rimo massif) was not made until 1978 but was unsuccessful. An attempt to climb Rimo IV was made in 1985 but was also unsuccessful. So to date, none of the peaks have ever been ascended successfully.

For the pocket pens, I had been using a 4″ target length. So for a capped Rimo, that breaks down to about a 2 1/4″ long barrel and a 1 3/4″ long cap. But note, that’s the target. The pens are shaped by hand, so the actual length can be slightly longer. My sample pen, for example, with the extended no-post cap ended up at 4 1/8″. If you need a pen that’s under 4″, then you should order it with the shorter barrel and posting tenon. The target diameter is just under 5/8″. With those dimensions, the weight (without ink and with the mini squeeze converter) will be 18–20 grams using most standard acrylics.

One of my major goals for the RIMO was customization. Think of it as a pen canvas that you can use to make other unique pens. If you like to create unique pens, then add your own features. Like the PFP and Pnut, you can add various bands to make it unique or even change the shape.

1. Inking: The RIMO has three different inking options:
a) Disposable cartridges. With the longer barrel, the pen will accept both short and long cartridges.
b) Eyedropper. An eyedropper is a pen that is filled directly with ink. The filling style was called eyedropper, because an eye dropper was used to transfer the ink from a bottle to the pen. Pen enthusiasts convert standard C/C pens into eyedroppers by applying silicone grease to the threads. But like the PFP, it has an O-ring above the front section threads for an airtight seal against the barrel, allowing it to be used as an eyedropper without requiring grease on the threads.
c) Mini squeeze converter. A more secure option over the eyedropper for using bottled ink.

2. Nibs: The RIMO comes standard with a larger #6 Jowo nib. But it can be ordered with a smaller #5 nib if desired. And if you require a shorter-length pen, the smaller nib would allow for a slightly shorter cap. So if you think the standard RIMO is a little too long for your taste, you can order it with a #5 nib and a shorter cap.

3. Posting and Barrel Length: I made the Rimo with a longer 2 1/4″ barrel so the pen had enough length to be used without posting the cap. But if you want the cap to post, I can add a posting tenon with threads or a smooth press-fit tenon. And if you do want the posting option but also want the 4″ length, you could order it with a 2″ (or shorter) barrel. Just keep in mind that if you order a barrel shorter than 2″, the mini squeeze converter will no longer fit. The converter requires a minimum of a 1 7/8″ long barrel.
