2-Tone Black & Bone Fountain Pen

Reminiscent of the 40’s era styling that’s become a timeless classic!

This pen is reminiscent of the 40’s era when the new jet age was just arriving and everything modern was coming into vogue: fast trains, fast cars, Zoot suits and pencil skirts. All these had sleek lines that has become an iconic design of the era and a timeless classic.

The pen was loosely styled after a few pen styles I found online. One of those was the Montblanc Garbo. The Garbo has the same color scheme, but used casein for the barrel instead of the bone. The casein has a faint pinstripe pattern.

The Garbo however has what I refer to as pinched shape on both the cap and barrel. Pinched is a convex or inward taper. On the Garbo it was meant to refer to Garbo’s curvy figure.

Another pen style I found had a unique clip with a thick ring mounted around the outside at the very top of the cap that kind of reminded me of a halo. The Garbo had a similar band, but it was separate from the clip.

Additionally the very top of the Garbo cap had a piece of black acrylic. Since I had to use a different style clip, I decided to try and mimic the halo effect with a thin piece of acrylic called pick guard on the finial to create an acrylic band.

Barrel & Section: For these I used solid black acrylic acetate for the barrel and section.

Cap material: I elected to use a piece of bone Lucite acrylic. At the time I couldn’t get casein, but had the bone on hand (fast forward several years-it’s actually the exact opposite now. The casein is readily available, but bone Lucite acrylic is hard to find).

The bone Lucite isn’t quite a solid color. It has very fine clear streaks running the length of the material. So although it’s very subtle, it mimics the pinstripe in the Casein that was used for the original pens.

Finial: As mentioned above, I used pick guard material for some of the finial. It’s called pick guard because it’s used to make the plastic ‘pick guard’ plates on guitars. The guard material is only about 3/32″ thick and is made up of thin layers of acrylic sandwiched together.

Because the material is layered it comes in a variety of color combinations. You can find the material in small sizes and assorted colors. I used a piece of white & black and drilled it out to fit over the threads on the finial then glued it in place before turning the finial to shape.
