Blue Matrix Two-Tone Fountain Pen
In blue & silver matrix acrylic with black accents.
This material is an Acrylic called Blue-Silver Matrix. The matrix pattern appears to be made up of a bunch of tiny squares. But it’s actually a bit deceptive. Kind of one of those it is, but it isn’t. As is quite obvious, it IS a bunch of different colored squares. But it IS NOT created by gluing all those little squares together.
The Matrix pattern is actually created from striated blanks. Striated blanks have the colors running horizontally along the full length of the blank. So to make a matrix blank, they take these striated blanks and cut them into narrow blocks, then glue the block back together randomly. The result is what they call a matrix pattern.
I actually stumbled onto how this was done when I noticed the colors in a matrix blank and a striated blank were EXACTLY the same. Not only the colors were the same but fading pattern was the same in both matrix and striated blanks. So I surmised this is how I think the matrix blanks are created.
Shown below is an example of a striated blank in the foreground, and the matrix blank in the background. Each have the exact same colors.
Matrix colors:
The matrix blanks are available in a wide variety of colors. This one is comprised of blue, silver and black. There is also one that uses gold instead of silver that I used for a Nazca Lines. You can see that pen on my Nazca webpage.
Hardware finish:
The clip and bands on this pen are silver plated rather than the usual chrome or rhodium. The Silver plating has a satin sheen rather than the typical shinny finish, which blends very well with the silver in the acrylic. I sized the center section of the cap so the clip was framed top and bottom between the two accent bands.
About the nib:
The nib is a polished steel #6 Jowo. The polished steel also works well with the silver plating. The nib could also be upgraded with an 18k or 14k solid gold nib with rhodium plating.
Miscellaneous items:
I also offer a variety of hand-made pen-related items. Pen Props, pen cap Buttons, Pen and Ink Trays, Cufflinks, and Button Covers. Use a Pen Props to display a pen or temporarily raise the nib. Order in a pen-matching material or a wooden style in a variety of finishes. Cap Buttons are small pieces of cap jewelry you can add to a clipless pen to keep it from rolling. Use a Pen & Ink Trays to display your favorite pen and ink. Trays are available in several styles and in your choice of natural wood. Cufflinks and Button Covers are timeless favorites that dress up a shirt. Order them in pen-matching material.
